How do I know if my insurance covers it?
What is the purpose?
Hospital beds allow users to easily sit up, get in and out of bed, and allow for necessary pieces of equipment to be attached. By raising or lowering the head of the bed allows for the patient to sit up and get out of bed easier. For transferring from a wheelchair or chair to the bed, the bed height can be moved up or down to make this process easier.
What are the options available?
Manual, semi-electric or full-electric bed.
What is the difference?
The manual bed that has a series of three cranks that move the bed up and down and also raises the head or foot section of the bed. The semi-electric bed will raise or lower the head and foot of the bed with a button. The bed height still works with a manual crank. The full-electric model will raise or lower the head and foot of the bed along with the height of the bed with the push of a button. The full-electric model should come with an emergency crank in case of electric failure.
What safety cautions are there?
Before using or supervising a user in a hospital bed, be familiar with its functions. Hospital beds come equipped with brakes to prevent the bed from rolling, be sure these are locked before moving a user to or from the bed. To prevent a user from falling off of the bed, bed rails can be attached on either side. Also be sure to report any malfunctions or strange noises during use immediately.
How do I operate one?
Follow all manuals and instructions provided by the manufacturer of the bed and the supplier. To operate the cranks, typically turning clockwise raises and turning counter clockwise will lower the section or bed of each model.
