Ostomy Pouch Systems

The first thing you need to consider when shopping for ostomy products is the type of pouch system you want. There are two main types: one-piece and two-piece. One-piece systems have the bag and skin barrier all in one unit, while two-piece systems have a separate bag and skin barrier. There are pros and cons to each type.

One-piece systems are easier to put on and take off, and they're less likely to leak. However, they can be more expensive than two-piece systems. Two-piece systems may be more difficult to put on and take off, but they're usually less expensive.

Once you've decided which type of system you want, you'll need to choose a size. The size you need will depend on the type and location of your ostomy. You'll also need to decide whether you want a closed or open bag. Closed pouches are sealed at the bottom, and are taken off and disposed of when full. Open/drainable bags are open at the bottom and can be drained into a toilet when full. Drainable pouches are kept closed with a clip or rolled and sealed with a hook and look type closure.

Ostomy Skin Barriers

The skin barrier is the part of the ostomy system that attaches to your skin. It's important to choose a skin barrier that's the right size for your stoma and that will stay in place. Too large of a hole for your stoma will result in leakage, while a hole that is too small can be uncomfortable around your stoma.

Finally, you'll need to choose between a flat or convex barrier. Some stomas are more of an “innie,” and the skin around the stoma doesn’t allow for it to protrude out into the pouch. If this is your case, you will want a convex flange. The convex flange is a solid piece that pushes the skin around the stoma in, and allows the stoma to pop out into the bag. This allows for more output to go into the pouch. The downside is that a convex flange is less flexible. If the skin around the stoma is relatively flat and the stoma is an “outie,” you would typically prefer the more flexible flat barrier.
