Ostomy Care and Recovery
Ostomy Care and Recovery
In some cases, recovery from a surgical procedure also means adjusting to changes. Ostomy surgery, for example, is a life-saving procedure that is often necessary due to many conditions, including diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, incontinence, surgery, birth defects, and more. This procedure allows bodily waste to pass through a stoma that’s been surgically created for the patient. The waste is collected in a prosthetic that’s often referred to as an ostomy bag or pouch located outside of the body. For continent diversion surgeries, an internal pouch will be created surgically.
If you’re scheduled for an ostomy surgery or have recently had one, we’re here to help. Visit us at Mark Drug Medical Supply today for the support you need. We’re conveniently located in Wheeling, IL. Our staff would be happy to answer your questions and help you find the medical supplies you need to live happily and comfortably.
Colostomy Care
A colostomy is a surgically created opening in the abdomen. The process entails bringing a piece of the colon/large intestine outside of the abdominal wall. Then, a stoma is created so that food can be digested and passed into the external pouch. While it might take some time to adjust to life with a pouching system, it won’t take long to get used to caring for your colostomy. Pouches are free of odor and come in disposable or reusable varieties. Ostomy supplies are usually available at medical supply stores like Mark Drug Medical Supply.
Your activities shouldn’t change too much. You’ll still be able to work, except for jobs that call for heavy lifting. Your social life and sex life will likely remain unaffected. You can often wear your usual clothing, but this will depend on the stoma. You can still participate in sports and exercise, too, but be sure to avoid heavy contact. Traveling isn’t restricted either. You can choose whether you prefer to shower with or without your pouch. Remember, you should always follow your physician’s instructions regarding your diet after surgery.
Ileostomy Care
An ileostomy is fairly similar but involves a piece of the ileum or the lowest part of the small intestine being brought outside the abdominal wall. This procedure also involves the creation of a stoma paired with a pouching system. Pouches are the same as well, so don’t forget to give us a call or visit our store when you need to restock.
Your life won’t be severely different after an ileostomy. The same concept applies to work, so be sure to avoid heavy lifting. Your social life and sex life should remain the same. If there are issues, it’s often related to the removal of the rectum. Fortunately, there are plenty of emotional support groups for couples to help you cope. Clothing will remain the same, too. For sports, including swimming, you can easily participate while wearing the attached pouch. Again, you must follow your doctor’s dietary guidelines after the procedure.
Urostomy Care
For a urostomy, a surgically created opening is placed in the abdominal wall for urine to pass through. This is often performed when the bladder isn’t functioning properly or needs to be removed. Although the rectum is not involved in this procedure, the pouching system is similar. You can get reusable or disposable pouches that are odor-free. Plus, you’re able to find different types of pouches to fit the contours of your body. This guarantees that you’ll be able to find something to fit your lifestyle and personal preferences.
For the most part, caring for a urostomy is the same, but there are a couple of differences worth noting. First, sexual function might be influenced depending on the reasons for the procedure. Sexual activity itself should remain unaffected. When it comes to clothing, sports, and work, there are no major changes to worry about. As for your diet, you usually won’t have to deal with any restrictions. However, it is suggested that 8 to 10 glasses of fluid be consumed each day to lower the risk of kidney infection.
