Oxygen Concentrator Travel Tips

If you are new to using an oxygen concentrator, you might feel a little apprehensive about traveling with your equipment. Not to worry – if you have a portable oxygen concentrator, traveling is a breeze. Thanks to its light and compact design, you can take your portable oxygen concentrator anywhere, even on airplanes.

If you are planning to fly with your oxygen equipment in the near future, the following tips from Mark Drug Medical Supply will help you proceed with confidence!

Caring For Your Oxygen Needs

If you have a respiratory condition, there is always a risk of experiencing hypoxemia at high altitudes. The air on an airplane contains less oxygen than the air we normally breathe, so you will need to compensate by increasing the flow rate on your oxygen concentrator.

Fortunately, your risk level for hypoxemia can be determined in advance. To evaluate your oxygen needs during a flight, you can undergo a hypoxic challenge, also known as a “fit to fly” test. This test involves breathing air with a similar oxygen content to that found in an airplane.

Based on the results of this test, your doctor will determine the amount of oxygen you need at high altitudes. It may be necessary to repeat this test in the future, depending on how your condition changes over time. Prior to your next flight, consult with your doctor to determine if another test is needed.

Caring For Your Equipment

If you own a portable oxygen concentrator, you’re all set – this is the only kind of oxygen equipment allowed on airplanes. However, it is necessary to inform the airline in advance about your equipment. Some airlines may request a letter from your doctor confirming your need for portable oxygen. Keep in mind that your oxygen concentrator does not count toward your carry-on limit, so you can still bring all your usual carry-on items along with your concentrator.

For a smooth journey, remember to bring your prescription for supplemental oxygen, and plenty of battery packs to keep your concentrator operational during the flight. We also recommend carrying an extra three-way plug to recharge your equipment at the airport.
